About IT Transition

Throughout 2007, there has been substantial research undertaken to discover how IT at UNSW will look and operate across the university. This has placed us in a position whereby we have a much stronger understanding of our environment. One of the key decisions announced recently was that the University will not be outsourcing the Managed Operating Environment Services (Service Desk, Email, File & Desktop Services). However, we are still investigating the external provision of Student Email & Printing Services but these will not involve any staff redundancies

The IT plan is premised on how we are to improve services to meet increasing demand and appropriate levels of expectations while maintaining satisfaction levels, containing costs and protecting UNSW from risk. Our intention is to help UNSW maintain and indeed improve its standing as a leading University in the Asia Pacific Region. We believe the best way for IT to do this is for us to focus on supporting core University activity and therefore need to think differently about IT. To achieve this we need to take a holistic UNSW approach to IT and align IT with the University, moving us from a firefighting unit with high administrative overheads to a transparent, accountable organisation enabling improvements in research and teaching. The key objectives of the IT Plan include:

  • To establish a single IT organisation for all of UNSW with both shared services and locally delivered unique services that are specific to faculties and schools.
  • To launch a new governance model that ensures the strategic alignment of IT investments while balancing outcomes and risk, as well as performance and resource management.
  • To consolidate and improve our IT infrastructure to ensure sustainability and support the University’s growth into the future – whilst containing costs.
  • To transform our IT utility services (Email, File and Data, Desktop, Print) into a shared consistent service, supported by a single service desk and underpinned by a flexible Standard Operating Environment.
  • To implement a service management framework that enables IT services to be measured, managed and improved.
  • To review, consolidate and improve the University’s portfolio of applications and address gaps in requirements.
For many services the first step will be to pilot the services in a low risk area. These initiatives will ensure we have a co-odinated approach to provisioning IT Services across UNSW whilst leveraging our buying power and sharing knowledge and skills of our IT staff across UNSW. In particular, this will also allow us to share solutions, infrastructure and services.

More details of the IT Change Program will be made available throughout the New Year via the OneUNSW program website and this site.
