About zPass

About the zPass system

IT at UNSW has introduced a new password system called zPass. This will be a more secure password system than the current UniPass system.

Staff who have their email migrated to the central UNSW Exchange Email Service or receive new UNSW Desktop computers as part of the UNSW IT Change Program will need a zPass to log on. Some student labs will require a zPass for computer log on so staff who access those labs may also require a zPass.

New online UNSW systems such as Blackboard will require a zPass login. UniPass will continue to be used on existing online services such as myUNSW, eLearning WebCT and Library online. If the logon page does not mention zPass then assume it requires a UniPass.

What is a zPass?

A zPass is a password. You use your zPass along with your 'z number' User ID to access services that are zPass enabled (see table below).

What is a z number?

To access zPass enabled applications and web sites, need to enter your staff ID (staff number) with a z prefix.

To find out more about your staff number and prefixes visit the usernames page.

When logging into systems requiring a zPass do the following:

  • Staff who currently have an ‘s’ staff number, simply replace the ‘s’ with a ‘z’ (so that s1234567 becomes z1234567)
  • Staff who currently have a ‘z’ number – simply use this as it is
  • Staff who currently have an ‘m’ should refer to the usernames page.
How do I obtain a zPass?

You need to create a zPass in Identity Manager. Follow the instructions linked below:
